How To Join The Gears
How to Join the Gears of War 3 Beta
Article by Ryan Moyer
Gears of War 3 received a lot of interest when it was announced on the Jimmy Fallon show with a relatively soon April 2011 release date. Aside from it being a huge game, the release date was surprisingly close. It would appear that Microsoft felt that release date was too soon as well, as they delayed the game to the holiday season. But that wasn’t all bad news, as Epic Games (the developer behind the Gears of War games) has decided to spend the extra time by offering up a public multiplayer beta.
The first two Gears games, and especially Gears of War 2, were plagued with bugs and glitches upon release. Many people were extremely disappointed that these glitches were not sorted out prior to release, and many even joked, calling Gears of War 2′s release a beta, due to the state the game was in. Epic eventually squashed all the bugs, but by the time they did that (months after release) most of the gaming population had moved on. This time, their goal is to get those bugs squashed prior to the games release, in a beta.
As of now, Epic has released only one way to get into the Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta, and that is by purchasing the Epic Edition of Bulletstorm. It is unknown at this point whether Epic will release any additional means for getting into the beta, but other than a few small contests it is unlikely. Don’t worry though, because most Gears fans will likely also enjoy Bulletstorm.
The Gears of War 3 beta will be a multiplayer beta only. The single player campaign mode will not be featured. The primary functions of the beta are to iron out any bugs or glitches in the game, and to properly balance the new weapons and maps, such that this time around the game won’t require six title updates. The beta will likely last only a couple of weeks, and will launch in April. This methodology is very similar to the one used for Halo Reach, which came with a purchase of Halo ODST and lasted a couple of weeks as well.
Gears of War 3 will also feature some new executions, which will likely be tested out in the beta as well to see if Epic has pushed the envelope too far this time. The Gears of War games are known for their gruesome deaths and over the top kills, and Gears 3 will be no different, even allowing you to scorch an enemy locust from the inside out with a flamethrower.
One other big thing of note that will be featured in the Gears 3 beta is dedicated servers. Host advantage has always been a problem in Gears of War games, with the host’s better connection typically leading them to getting much easier kills and much better scores. With Gears 3, the games will be hosted on Epics servers, such that there is no player based host and all competitors will have an equal advantage.
